#17 Are you Standing on the Edge of a Gangplank?

Are you just about to walk the plank into oblivion? Fair enough if Captain Jack Sparrow is treading water and waiting for you with open arms. Who wouldn’t leap off the end?

But in reality are you heading down the gangplank, having lost sight of what your business is all about, into a massive pool of deep blue water?

Talking to colleagues and clients over the last few weeks, one significant thing keeps appearing regularly in conversation. The fact that some individuals are jumping head first into “new” ideas without a life-jacket on! They appear to be seeing a new idea or new growth in their business as a fantastic opportunity to branch out, to take a plunge and to embrace this new BFF (best friend forever) with open arms. Open arms maybe but eyes shut in my opinion.

As you know my ethos is all about making things happen. However to make things happen for you and your life or business it is important to consider what it is you are doing and how it meets with your goals and dreams. As you stand on the edge of the gangplank with all but air between you and the hungry sharks and high seas (or Jack Sparrow!) ask yourself: “Is this who I am and how I see my life/business going?”

Do you blatantly want to feed yourself to the sharks by blindly jumping off?

Have you lost sight of the goals and dreams you had? The vision you created at the start of your voyage? Can you see land or endless miles of open water and white crested waves? Do you feel a little seasick?

Before you force yourself to walk the plank, at knife-point, think carefully about the next steps you will take. Your voyage is determined by the wind in your sails. Some days will be calm, while others will be rough. Will you ride out the storm and reach dry land unscathed?

Listen to your gut feeling. Make sure your new idea meets with your vision. Believe in your goal. Raise your anchor, hoist your sails and let the winds take you toward the sunset of your life!
